Munti Gunung is an area high on the rugged north eastern slopes of Mount Batur on the north eastern side of the island of Bali.
The people of Munti Gunung are very poor and struggle to survive in a dry and desolate landscape in this forgotten corner of the paradise island. Without good water supply and with little vegetation, the people suffer from very poor nutrition and a number of health ailments including tuberculosis. Mortality rates are high and incomes very low, in the order of about 10 cents per day, which is considerably less than the United Nations standard of one US dollar per day.
It is estimated that 5,000 people live in the area. Education levels are very low and family planning is not available and as a result a large proportion of the population are children.
A team of dedicated volunteers has been providing assistance to the people of the region for several years. During 2008/09 this effort required a more formal approach so the Munti Gunung project was brought under the organisational umbrella of Yayasan Peduli. Then in 2009, due to the size of the task, it was necessary to form Yayasan Peduli Munti Gunung, a new foundation, which could then concentrate solely on the area in order to achieve better results.
Work to date has concentrated on emergency healthcare, food and clothing for the people of Munti Gunung. Treatment of a range of illnesses is being organized by mobile teams visiting the area and on many occasions it has been necessary to bring the more severe cases down to Denpasar to receive hospital and other specialist treatment.
In late 2009 Yayasan Peduli Munti Gunung was able to commission a sample health survey of the Munti Gunung area which was undertaken by the School of Public Health. This direction will still progress in 2010 to assist in the possible upgrading of healthcare to the area.
Yayasan Peduli Munti Gunung is also working in partnership with another NGO "Yayasan Masa Depan Untuk Anak Anak" which is also working in the Munti Gunung area to provide desperately needed water supplies for the people of the mountain. Over the past year several water catchment systems have been installed and several more are currently underway.
Yayasan Masa Depan Untuk Anak Anak is also starting to develop some enterprise development projects to help the Munti people to climb out of their poverty. These take the form of growing and harvesting crops such as rosella flowers and cashew nuts.
A future objective of Yayasan Peduli Munti Gunung is to provide emergency health care to the people of Munti Gunung and it is now also planning a comprehensive program of activity to eradicate serious illnesses, correct deformities caused by malnutrition and raise the general health and education of the population.
Yayasan Peduli Munti Gunung is also engaged in an ambitious project to sponsor children in the local Munti schools. This is done by obtaining overseas sponsorships for children to assist with books, pens & paper, uniforms and lunches etc as well as ensuring that each sponsor gets regular feedback on their child’s progress throughout their schooling. The Yayasan currently has 30 children in this sponsorship program.
Although there are several other foundations within Bali who provide support to people from the mountainous regions, only Yayasan Peduli Munti Gunung offers the people of the Munti Gunung area support in health, welfare and education through the following areas:
- Constant support for patients in finding medical assistance.
- Sponsoring of the education of children within the villages through the managing of overseas funding donations.
- Constantly monitoring the children’s progress.
- Patient Transport – to and from Munti Gunung to Denpasar.
- Accommodation – before & after operations or medical attention in Denpasar.
